Thank my Lucky Spells Page 15
She looked serious, the color draining from her face. “Another death?” she asked softly.
“No, good news this time. We caught the suspect, Lara. The killer is in custody with the police right now. It’s all over.”
“Oh my goodness,” she murmured, looking totally shocked. “That’s amazing! So, that means that it’s actually safe for me out there now? I don’t have to watch my back?”
“Except for the paparazzi and nosy neighbors, nope, you’re all good,” I declared.
“Oh, Arti, thank you!” Lara threw her arms around me again and I patted her on the back as she squeezed me.
“You’re welcome,” I laughed. “But what are you going to do now? Are you heading back to the lakehouse?”
She sighed. “I suppose so. The doctors have totally cleared me. I’m all better. And now that the killer is caught, well, there’s no excuse not to go back there,” she said, shrugging.
I could tell that despite the brave face she was putting on, Lara was still reluctant to return to that house. It was still the scene of a terrible crime. I couldn’t blame her for wanting to avoid it longer. Then, I came up with an idea.
“Hey,” I said, linking my arm with hers. “What if you come stay with me for a few days? I have an extra room, it wouldn’t be any trouble. Besides, Lucy is already there.”
She brightened up instantly. “Are you sure?”
“Of course! It’s not as fancy as what you’re used to, but it’s not bad, either.”
“It sounds perfect. Oh, it’ll be so fun. Like an old-fashioned slumber party. And I can’t wait to hold Lucy again. Thank you so much!”
The two of us checked out of the hospital and hopped aboard my broomstick, zooming off toward the Manor. When we arrived back at the Manor, Lara whistled, looking up at the building.
“Impressive. It’s really beautiful. And I bet it’s historic, too,” she commented.
“Yep. It’s been here forever,” I confirmed, opening the front door. “Come on in. Don’t mind my guests, they’re really friendly.”
Lara followed me into the foyer, oohing and ahhing at everything with genuine awe. It was nice to have such a famous celebrity, who was most certainly accustomed to staying in five-star resorts, to approve of my humble bed and breakfast. “I wonder where Lucy’s hiding,” she mused out loud. She set down her little overnight bag and we both got to work searching for the cats. After a good ten minutes of looking around, we found them, curled up together underneath the coffee table in the living room, white fur blending with black fur. It was possibly the cutest thing I had ever seeen.
“Oh, look at them!” Lara gushed. At the sound of her voice, both cats woke up with a start. As soon as they realized we were looking at them, they glanced at each other in horror and bolted away, hissing.
Lara scooped Lucy up into her arms and hugged her tight, happy tears in her eyes. “I missed you so much, Lucy Goosey!” she murmured, burying her face in the fluffy cat’s fur. Lucy purred so loudly I could have sworn it made the floors vibrate. Meanwhile, Luna was trying her hardest to deny that she’d been cuddling - of her own accord - with the enemy.
“It was an accident! She must have sneaked up on me while I was sleeping!” she complained as I scooped her up. “You have to believe me!”
“Whatever you say, Lu,” I laughed. “Whatever you say.”
